here. the runners took off in mass. 40,000 people expected to participate. this is a 12-kilometer race. the men and women, there is only about 60 of them. they will finish this race anywhere between 34 and 40 minutes. the race is known for the not so serious runners, the bulk of the 40,000 here. you see the massive sea of people backed up that are now making their way through the start line. these runners will go south past civic center, golden gate park, and there is so many people participating. again, 40,000 people. the roads will be closed. that's when traffic will be cleared. what we won't see this year, just

brought in to evaluate the damage to a house and determine if structural integrity. >> investigators are trying to figure out what caused a house fire in san francisco that sent three people to the hospital. the fire broke out last night around 7:30 in the city's bayview district. a neighbor reported the cell phone video of flames coming from the house just as firefighters arrived. neighbors say residents were throwing a party when that fire started. they say one man was burned while trying to rescue others. >> i look out the window and i saw flames everywhere. we all rushed outside. the whole house was on fire. i was just shocked. >> two people were taken to st. francis memorial hospital. the third went to san francisco general hospital. the fire also knocked out electrical lines. 31 pg&e customers lost power for several hours. a few hundred marijuana plants remain in oakland warehouse

caught on fire. authorities say the conditions are too dangerous for them to go when and get them, but police plan to execute a search warrant. we first told you about the fire yesterday. that fire so intense as you can see the flames were shooting 30 feet in the air. neighbors were worried about their safety. >> police are looking for whoever shot and injured a teenager. the 18-year-old was shot around 6:40 last night near honeysuckle drive. police found him with that one -- with at least one gunshot wound or your police say the shooting was gang related. anyone with information about this case is asked to call the san jose police department. >> the nation's largest and oldest african-american civil rights group is throwing its support behind same-sex marriage. the naacp voted yesterday to declare marriage equality and civil rights are you the group also spoke out against proposition 8 in the past. this stance comes two weeks

>> thousands of people running through the streets of san francisco right now. this morning the 101st beta breakers race is officially underway. welcome back. >> we do have live team coverage of the beta breakers race. allie rasmus is live along the route with restrictions in place. first, we want to go to cannes at the starting line. >> you can really get an appreciation for the size of this race. the starting line is here. of 40,000 people participating today. this race started at 7:00. we still have people that don't to the bay waiting to get through the starting line. this group here are the more colorful runners, some

overdressed, others underdressed to do anything in public. let's take a look at the start of this race. 60 elite runners that started off this race. they will run in the neighborhood of 35 to 40 minutes. we talked to one man who's been here for 19 straight years. he says some of the rule changes have given a damper. the wheeled objects this year just like last year. no alcohol all out. we also talked to another runner who has no complaints because the high-end xeon has never done this before. >> i've been working out for the last year with trainers.

just trying to get myself healthy. >> will take these runners to south of market past civic center. they will finish the race at ocean beach. that means some road closures here. expect the roads as you are heading down to this area, expect roads and traffic backed up until about 10:00 in the morning. >> they want to make sure the fund doesn't get out of hand. live in alamo square to tell us about the rules in place to crack down on rowdy behavior. >> the rules are no open containers, no alcohol, no float, and you have to be registered. so far about 40,000 people have. we are at the corner of scott and hayes where you can see people making their way down this

hill. just a heads-up, in case you see us move the camera away quickly, it's because we are trying to avoid getting any nudity on air. one of the rules that hasn't changed his runners can still run this race in the nude if they want. we are trained to censor that a little bit, if you will. so far we are at just seeing a lot of creative costumes. again, no floats, nothing like that that we saw a couple years ago. that all changed after the party got a little bit rowdy couple years ago back in 2010. there were 26 people who ended up owing to the hospital with all the while poisoning. after that some of the neighborhood associations went to the city and went to race organizers and said, if you want to run this race through our neighborhoods, you have to make some changes. all along the race route, to enforce these new restrictions, race organizers have hired dozens of private security guards and there is also about 360 police officers stationed along the

race route enforcing those open container and no alcohol rules. there's also about 50 neighborhood volunteers scattered along the course. the role is to direct people to the facilities. they are making sure that people use the restroom in the correct ways, also got a first aid tent on the corner. along with a 40,000 people taking part in this race, and estimated 80 to 100,000 people that are going to watch. this is about the midway at point in the race. so there is people coming down the hill for the next hour or so. live in san francisco, allie rasmus. >> thank you. here's a map of the course from the beta breakers. the race goes on howard street of the hayes street hill and through golden gate park. streets along the course will be closed until all of a.m. but closed until 4:00 p.m.

board of supervisors. before that, 19 years on the lafayette city council. she planned to retire from public office when her term expired next year. she taught at uc berkeley. >> gay-rights pioneer harvey milk being honored this week. the celebration started yesterday when this plaque was rededicated. the original plaque was stolen last october, and police suspect they took it to sell the metal. people attending the rededication ceremonies say the plaque is an important part of the community. >> we have to always remember harvey. he's a visionary and a trailblazer. >> he was one of the first openly gay politicians and made history when he was elected at san

francisco supervisor back in 1977. he was shot to death a year later along with the san francisco mayor. this tuesday will be the annual harvey milk day across california. schools are encouraged to hold ceremonies for saving his life. that is causing controversy though. >> someone stole a motorcycle belonging to the mayor of vallejo. he parked his 2001 harley davidson road king at city hall and it was stolen late friday afternoon from the employee only parking lot. the harley is black with chrome parts. david said he had the bike for more than a decade. he says it's frustrating and disappointing but he won't lose any sleep over it. >> been arrested for breaking into a middle school. it happened that hogan middle school. officers were called after someone saw two boys breaking into a classroom and leaving with a computer monitor. police found when the boys

forecast. i will show you what you can expect for the area and a look ahead, not. >> right now thousands of people in san francisco for the annual bay to breakers race. we have live team coverage. first, let's go to the start line. >> believe it or not, the participants here are starting to thin out a little bit but we still have thousands of people yet to cross the start. the start of bay to breakers was about an hour ago. 40,000 people are expected to participate. i've noticed over the past hour as we start to get toward the back of the participants, we see more costumes, more people having a good time here today. let's take a look at some video at the start of the race at 7:00 this morning. these are the serious runners that are running the 12-kilometer

race. there are about 40 so-called elite runners. the bulk of the 40,000 people are here for fun, many of them wearing costumes for you that is a the sixth tradition in the 101 years of the running of this race. there's another tradition, the tossing of tortillas. there is a history to be told. we talked to jim bland who brought hundreds of tortillas for the crowd to toss. >> they would bring beach balls out and throw them in the crowd. as the sponsorship died out, the beach balls went away. we started seeing tortillas show up. pretty soon just plain tortillas started showing up. now i bring them every year. >> of course, thousands upon thousands of tortillas are just

one of many things that the crews will cleanup. the participants make their way past civic center to golden gate park. the race will conclude at ocean beach. after this right now, we are going to try to make our way over to ocean beach to the finish line. we don't know what the traffic is going to be like between here and there. if you are headed to downtown, except the roads to be closed. >> the rules of the race are a little different compared to two years ago. organizers are hoping to crack down on public drunkenness. allie rasmus wife to tell us about the restrictions. >> is still early but so far there haven't been any problems. keep in mind one of the rules that hasn't changed is that murray is still the law. if you see us move the camera away quickly, it's because we are trying to avoid getting that on air.

no alcohol, no open containers, no floats. everyone who runs in bay to breakers has to register to run. we'll show you, this is the hayes street hill where you see thousands of people make in their wake past alamosa square. this race goes through seven different san francisco neighborhoods. two years ago some neighbors complained about the party getting a little out of hand. the race was almost canceled until organizers and a new sponsor came in. they put the new rules in place. this is the second year in a row. some of those people say so far so good. >> it's pretty calm today. i don't see any beer cakes yet. compared to the last couple years. they've got it more control.

>> along with some private security, race organizers have hired more private security this year to enforce those new rules. there is also about 360 san francisco police officers on duty on the race route. they are at scott and hayes street. this is kind of the midpoint of this race. there is also neighborhood volunteers. people will live in the seven different neighborhood who have volunteered to be a longer route and direct people, people who may be drunk and a little bit too excited. you direct them where to go to find the facilities, find bathroom's, and there's also a row of portable base here. all of these organizations are trying to make sure that people party safely and there is still an effective atmosphere here.

before 9:00. pg&e said the meter on the line was sheared off and that left the line on cap and was out a shutoff valve. building inspectors were brought in to inspect the house. one person was injured in an accident and was taken to san francisco general. >> investigators try to determine what sparked a house fire in san francisco hospitalizing three people. the fire broke out last night around 7:30 in the city's bayview district. a neighbor reported cellphone video of the flames coming from the house as firefighters arrived. neighbors say residents were throwing a party when the fire started. they say one man was burned trying to rescue the others. >> i saw flames everywhere. we all rushed outside. the whole house was on fire. i was in shock. >> two people were taken to save france's with burn injuries. the third injured -- a third injured went to san francisco

bay hospital. 31 pg&e customers lost power for several hours. a few hundred marijuana plants inside in oakland warehouse. authorities say the conditions are too dangerous to enter, but police are planning to execute a search warrant. we first told you about this yesterday. the fire was so intense flames shot 30 feet into the air. neighbors were worried about their safety. no arrests have been made. >> san jose police looking for whoever shot and injured a teenager. 18-year-old was shot around 6:40 last night. police found him with at least one gunshot wound, it is expected to survive. police say the shooting was gang related and anyone with information is asked to call san jose police. >> the city of oakland wants to ban protesters from carrying what they call tools of violence.

>> good morning. at this point, we don't see too many people running, it's mostly people walking or jogging. even see thousands of people still making their way down past alamosa square park. customs are still allowed, and so is nudity, so keep in mind if you see our camera move out of the way, it's because we are trying to avoid you seeing that life. so far, we haven't seen any blatant displays of drunkenness. we have seen people with containers of gatorade, maybe gatorade mixed with some other things, but so far no problems or no arrests out here. we haven't had anyone yanked off the racecourse. a couple years ago public drunkenness became a problem. 26 people went to the hospital without all poisoning. for the second year in a row, new restrictions in place. no open containers, no alcohol, no floats, and everyone running must be registered. neighbors who live around here say so far, so good for you some of the people who came to watch say it's too early to see if people are following the rules just yet.

injuries a fire caused and why firefighters had an especially difficult time knocking this one down. a car slams into a san francisco home. the damage it caused that had

crews on the scene all night long. good morning, everyone. welcome. it's sunday, may 20. >> we're going to have another nice day to closeout your weekend, but then some cooler weather is moving on in. our meteorologist has a quick look at your forecast. hi, rosemary. >> good morning to you. if you enjoyed yesterday, you're going to enjoy today. maybe even a little better for some along the coastline, waking up with mostly sunny skies and into the valley numbers warming once again. 60s for the coast and 70s around the bay, 80s for some of the inland spots. i'll break it down in a bit. we begin with an update on breaking news in the peninsula. within the next few minutes they're hoping to clear up a pileup on the northbound lanes of highway 101 at marine parkway. the crash happened about an hour ago. it does involve several

motorcycles. there were initial reports a fight broke out, but the highway patrol says there were no altercations, just people that were hurt from the collision. they did update and tell us one to two lanes are blocked, down from four lanes. again, we'll continue to watch that, but we do expect traffic to move back through soon. the 111th race, elite runners done, but plenty of people still out there. what's happening out there? >>reporter: sometimes people forget it's for a good cause, some people walking, some signs and a lot of costumes, and at

this point it's turned more into the festive tradition it's known for. neighbor complaints about the 2010 race getting out of hand. we haven't seen any arrests for violating the rules, but we did talk to people who found ways to get around them. >> vodka and vitamin water, keep you hydrated and get you drunk. >> you know that's not allowed. >> well, still got to have a good time. it's san francisco. >>reporter: do you think that will ever change, finding ways to get around the rules? >> never. >>reporter: now, along with the 40,000 people who have

registered to take part in the race, there are an estimated 80 to 100,000 lined up along the route watching the people -- i don't know if you call them runners at this point, but a moving block party essentially. race organizers have hired private security and police and have red cross stationed on the corner over there. again, we haven't seen any arrests, no blatantties plays of public drunkenness. some people are finding ways to get around the rules. >>. >>reporter: wore two hours and

nine minutes into the race. the elite runners finished a long time ago. the woman finished slightly faster than last year. the male a little off the peace from last year. what we have here are thousands of people, 40,000 participating in beta breakers. there are thousands more to go. when we were live an hour ago, we were at the start line. we did not travel through the middle of the city to get here to the finish line. we took the long way south around because there are road closures still in effect for the beta breakers race. expect the road closures through downtown starting to move toward the ocean beach area.

expect them until about 10:00. >> the race goes to the west end of golden gate park where we just saw ken do his live report. expect street closures along the route until 11:00 a.m. areas around the park where the finish line is, those will be closed down until 4:00 in the afternoon. today is probably not the best day to look to drive right through san francisco. muni is running special shuttles for the race, running until 2 p.m. you can board with a special events pass, which ranges from 8-$12. there are longer trains for those going to and from the beta breakers. we have more information on the website. you can see the course map in the weekend extra section of ktvu.com. a crew had to cap a gas line that ruptured after a car

slammed into a house in san francisco. the vehicle rolled over and ended up upside down. the crash happened just before 9:00 last night at this home. building inspectors were brought in to evaluate structural integrity of the house. one person injured in the accident and taken to san francisco general. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a house fire in san francisco that sent three people to the hospital. that fire broke out around 7:30 last night at a home on lucy street. a neighbor recorded this cell phone video here of flames coming from the house just as firefighters arrived. neighbors say residents were throwing a party when the fire started. they say one man was burned trying to rescue the others. >> i looked out the window and saw flames going everywhere, and we rushed outside. the house was just on fire. i was in shock.

i didn't believe it was happening. >> two people were taken to st. francis memorial hospital with burn injuries. the third victim went to san francisco general. the fire also knocked out electrical lines making the situation even more dangerous. 31 customers lost power for several hours. a few marijuana plants remain inside an oakland warehouse that caught fire. the conditions too dangerous for them to go inside and get the plants, but police are planning to execute a search warrant. we first told about you this fire yesterday right here on mornings on . flames shot up 30 feet into the air. neighbors say they were worried about their safety. no arrests have been made. today police are looking for who shot an injured a teenager. the 18-year-old was shot near honeysuckle drive. police found him with at least one gunshot wound, and he is expected to survive. police say this shooting was gang related, and anyone with any information is asked

to call san jose police. the nation's largest and oldest african-american civil rights group is throwing their support behind gay marriage, naacp voting to declare gay marriage a civil right. this comes two weeks after president obama came out in support of same sex marriage. >> i think people listen when they issue a statement. marriage equality is something people are talking about on a national level and are going to start talking about in their homes. >> same sex marriage is legal in six states and the district of columbia, but 31 states have passed amendments to ban it. tomorrow the highway patrol and police agencies across the state will increase seat belt enforcement. california's click it or ticket runs tomorrow through june 3. authorities say anyone caught unbuckled can expect a ticket, not a warning. the fines for not wearing a seat belt start at $142 for

clothing popping up, observing from their position and also some of the barricade and vans that are in place to keep anyone from getting up close to mccormick place, all of this as the tensions have been growing between police and protesters, and they're now enter their largest day. we've seen a few skirmishes. one dem stray forgot in front of a police van, pounding on the van. the van accelerated with the demonstrator in front and he is now claiming he was injured. we've seen police using batons to shove demonstrators back onto the route. we've seen them use them to strike demonstrators. more than one dozen people have been arrested thus far. the most alarming are a fourth person has been hit with charges related to terrorism. this is a 24-year-old individual from the north side, and his charges relate to the manufacturing of cocktails that

were supposed to be used at this particular event. now, an organizer says the idea of their demonstrations is to get the world to focus on nato when in fact just the opposite happens. you get people focusing on the demonstrators. they form up protest stew. that's what gets all of the attention out here. the police technique seems to largely be, you're young, angry, want to march. get on the street and walk it off. they have these kids marching in circles until about 11:00 when the protest simply died out because the kids got tired. the police presence that we see, a lot of light gear with the police close to the crowds, these are police who are mostly mounted on bicycles. the police with the heavier gear it close by and can be called in if needed. mike? >> thanks for that update, mike. we appreciate it. bay area antiwar activists are holding their own rally in support of the nato protesters.

friends and family are remembering three boston university students killed in a van crash in new zealand. funeral services were held yesterday. they were travel being in a van when it rolled over during a sightseeing trip. several others were hurt. new zealand authorities have charged the van driver, also a boston university student with careless driving. all of the students were there on a study abroad program. mary kennedy has been laid to rest at the kennedy family compound, estranged of robert kennedy junior found dead wednesday in new york. the medical examiner says the 52-year-old died of asphyxiation by hanging. a private memorial was held yesterday. mary's long time friend and sister-in-law spoke afterwards. >> she was brilliant and beautiful, and she cared so very deeply about everybody

firefighters in southern california working to put out a fire that injured a firefighter in fontana. flames spread to a nearby tire business and damaged at least three buildings. about 200 firefighters from across san bernardino county are working to get this fire under control. one firefighter is expected to recover from his heat related injuries.

gaudalupey river. the cause of death is not known, but police say foul play is not suspected. the city of oakland wants to ban protesters from carrying tools of violence. those include shields, poles and hammers according to the san francisco chronicle. the city council's public safety committee is considering the ordinance on tuesday, and it would apply to demonstrations planned in the city of oakland. the ordinance does seem to be in response to occupied demonstrations which have included incidents of vandalism. harvey milk is being honored this week. the celebration started yesterday when a new plaque was rededicated. the original was stolen last october. it's suspected that thieves took it to sell the metal. people attending the rededication ceremony say the
